proposal final

Proposed  Topic: When it comes to TV idents there are six main purposes they hold: 

Identity 
Marketing 
Packaging 
Re-packaging 
Scheduling 
Segmentation within scheduling 


Identity: 
The first and arguably the most important purpose of an ident is to give a channel its identity. This is done so that channel stands out from the rest in a positive and eye catching way with the hope that it will attract more viewers to the channel. An ident is designed with specific colours, objects and shapes in order to represent what the channel stands for and its identity. For example E4 have had hundreds of different idents in the past years but they all focus on being unique and different as E4 as a channel itself is very unique and different as they broadcast different and unique programs compared to channels such as BBC and ITV. E4 show that they are unique in their idents by making sure that there is a lot of colour (apart from their known colour purple) and events happening within the ident, they tend to take an animated approach to their idents which again makes them stand out from the crowd as animation is almost like a separate reality from ours which again leads back to E4 being unique and different. 

Marketing: 
Secondly marketing is another important purpose of an ident within the television industry. Idents can be placed by the channel at both the start and end of a programme, this can be used a marketing technique to remind the viewer what channel they are watching. Not only does it remind the viewer what channel they are watching but it also puts across the channels identity to them which if appeals to the viewer, it makes it more likely that they will return to the channel more frequently. People tend to flick through channels without paying any attention what channel they are on in order to find a programme they like, this leads back to reminding the viewer what channel they are watching as many viewers don't often pay attention to what channel they are on and only what programme they like, so an ident is used as a constant reminder to the viewers. 

Packaging & Re-Packaging: 
If a channel were to make a change in branding, identity or the type of programmes that they choose to broadcast, the ident can play a huge role in this change as the ident can also change in order to accommodate the other changed happening within the channel. By simply changing/altering a channels ident, that shows how the ident represents the channel and what it stands for, this shows how an ident can package and re-package a channel and the changes it has made. An ident can also package and re-package depending on the time of year, for example during Christmas a channels ident may be altered/changed to suit a more Christmasy image and identity to the channel which would appeal to its audience as it shows that the channel is in touch with its surroundings. 

Scheduling/Segmentation within Scheduling: 
Last but not least idents are also used with the purpose of scheduling and segmentation within scheduling. Many idents are shown before and after programmes shown on a certain channel, some of those idents have a voice over which tends to tell the viewer what programme is coming up next or what programme is currently showing. Due to the fact that idents represent the channels identity and what they stand for, the ident shown before certain programs may tend to relate to the programme being shown next, for example if there was a football match on next, the ident may consist of an animation of someone kicking a football. This animation would then have a voice over speaking over the ident informing the viewer about what programme/event is being shown next, this will help the channel create some form of scheduling. 

Purposes: 
I personally hope to achieve a lot from my ident. When creating the ident I will constantly have the target audience and what the channel stands for in mind, i have to come up with an ident that not only represented the channel in an appealing way but also meets the target audience's requirements. I will create this ident with the purpose to be eye catching and represent the channel in a way that the audience will not only love but will learn to live with and it be apart of their lives at home when the turn on their Television sets. 

Background: 
My aim with this ident is to attract a new type of audience to E4 and expand on its current target audience that the channel caters for at this moment in time. E4 have a current target audience aged 16-34, i aim to attract not only that current audience but expand the age range from 16-45. I believe that the ident i have created contains elements that will appeal to that age group and will hopefully attract more viewers to the channel. 

Scope: 
I aim to spend maximum 3 weeks in order to find and get in contact with participants whom are willing to help me with this project. Once i have put together a strong reliable team, we shall start making the ident which i hope will take no longer than 2/3 months. There will need to be funding in order for the ident to be successful, therefore i will show my ident to a number of venture capitalists whom may be interested in investing in the idea, once i have the funding i will show my idea to a number of people whom i will interview and then narrow down to 5 people whom i hope will help me make my ident idea come to life. 

Method: 
My main aim is to create and produce and ident that is leaps and bounds better than the current ident that E4 broadcast. In order to make sure this happens i will undergo a lot of research which will involve showing the ident to 15 people, 10 of whom are a current frequent view of E4 and 5 who hardly watch the channel, from this i hope to gain feedback in which can help me improve my ident if needed in order to appeal to not only the target audience but also that percentage of people who do not watch E4.

28. crew roles

Director: Harry 
definition: the director is the person that organises everything so that everything is in  the right place at the right time and is in charge of everything that is happening during the production of the filming.   
 

Producer: Charlie definition: the producer is second in charge during the filming as he as the producer has to make sure that everything is happening at the right time just like the director he follows what he does but has less control over what evereything that happens. his (the producer) main priorities is to make sure that the filming is happening correctly and everything is in place.     
 

Director of Photography (D.P.) Olly definition: as the director of photography every shot is taken as a picture has to be taken while the camera is still, making sure that the same lighting is being used in every image so that with the final edit looks good and has consistent lighting. 

 

Editor: Charlie definition: as an editor you are in charge of the editing when editing the main thing you need to do is to cut and crop together bits of film to make a final piece that looks good and professional. 

 

Camera Operator: Harry the camera operator the camera operators are in charge of the grips of the cameras that make sure the camera does not shake when filming.   

 

Minor Roles 
Assistant Camera (A.C.): Olly
definition the assistant camera helps the camera operator when filiming this could be helping with some extra grip or making sure the lighting for the project is good at all times anything to help the camera opirator.

Assistant Director : Charlie the assistant directors job is to complete any smaller jobs the director might want th to do this is to make there job a bit more easy. 
 

Art Director: Harry It is the art directors job to create any things that need to be made for the video for example: props. 
 

Location Scout: Charlie the location scout looks at potential sites for filming they have to determine if the site is good to film on and if it matches the theme of the production and if it also matches the description of the directors wishes.     
 

Production Manager (P.M.): Charlie the production managers job is to manage all the production aspects of the project. 
this means that they are in charge of logistics and budget there job is very important as if they did a bad job it might bankrupt the project.   
 
Screenwriter: harry 
the screenwriters job is to write the script for the project this means they are creating the story for the project. 
the screenwriters job is very important as they are creating the raw story for the project this means they have a say in the success of the project as people will judge the quality of the story and idea.

EBI: we need to speed up our ident, add a background to make it more life like and believable and also have our ident character to be more involved in the ident and then for him to turn into the E4 logo. We also need to design an E4 logo.

5. annotated research


Corporate identity research:
corporate identity theory is the overall image of a corporation or firm or business in the minds of diverse publics, such as customers and investors and employees.
within corporate identity, there are underlying categories. design, which represents the logo, colours of the logo and the font in which the logo is written in.communication, public relations e.g. E4 estings and programming. And finally, behavior, internal values/norms (what the company wants to acheieve) e.g. shows that appeal to their target audience.


Surveys:




My surveys represent all the different information you would need when designing an ident. They give detailed information such as wether or not people prefer animated or real life idents.











Interview: 













The questions in my interview directly relate to what you would want to know when designing an ident. From what the viewers would expect to see in the ident, to wether or not they prefer real life or animated idents.






Design and purpose research: 
we asked our target audience questions such as what would you expect to see in an ident? And do you prefer animated or real life idents? And from the results, we got a good idea of what to include in our ident. For example, we have incorporated the E4 logo and color scheme, our ident is animated because the majority of our target audience said that they preferred animated idents.




Barb:
Broadcasters audience research board is the organization that measures television ratings in the Uk. Participating viewers have a box on top of their TVs which track the shows they watch. Barb was created in 1977 to replace a previous system whereby ITV ratings were compiled by JICTAR whilst the BBC did their own research. Currently, BARB have approximately 5,100 homes- equating to approximately 11,500 individuals participating in the panel.






Channel  research: 





E4s website is laid out in a very simple yet effective way, At the top of the home page they have their logo, and everywhere else as a background they have their purple color scheme. The main feature of their websites home page is the programs they broadcast. They also have links to other pages of their websites such as the E4 shows and their new page Eefer.












E4s style guide has a number of different sections, each representing the different parts of their logo. From the logo's position to the font they use in their logo. Each section plays a crucial role in the design an manufacturing of the logo.












E4's style guide not only has sections on the logo, it also has sections for the channels they broadcast. For example, they have a list for their typography which they can then use to make titles for their new up coming shows.

31. revised proposal planning





















This is our new improved script whereby we have included the song Mecha Love by Hadouken to play throughout our ident rather than the sound effects we decided to have in our original ident.

Concept:
The idea behind our ident is to use stop motion animation to film our ident. We will use purple clay, which matches the E4 color scheme, to make a purple monster. Firstly, The purple monster will be erect and moving around. Then, the monster will melt into a flat piece of clay. After this, the monster will then grow into the E4 logo. There will be no narration or dialogue throughout our ident. The only noise throughout our ident will be music which will be played over the footage. The only character in our ident will be the purple monster. The stop motion footage will be filmed on an empty table.

Purpose:
E4 have a reasonably young target audience ( aged 16-34). My ident is aimed to entertain the target audience seeing as E4s ethos is to entertain their viewers. I will achieve this by making my ident fun, interesting and amusing to watch. I will use bright colored clay and unusual things will be happening in the ident. The meaning of the ident is to be fun and entertaining. This shows the viewers that E4 can  entertain them in a way they want to be entertained.

Key content:
Length: approximately 10 seconds
Narrative: The ident will start with a purple monster walking around, the monster will then melt down and then grow again to make the E4 logo. The ident will be made using stop motion animation.
Location: Table/ Desk
Characters: purple clay monster
Camera:Same shot and angle throughout the ident
Sound: The only sound throughout the video will be music

Target Audience: 
Appeal: Because my ident is for E4, they have a target audience of 16-34 year olds, so my ident will have to appeal to them.
Genre: My ident has a unique genre in the sense that it matches the idents of E4 in the way that it is both real life and animated, it is completely random and it is unusual.
Age: My ident is for people of the ages 16-34.
Gender: My ident is for both male and female viewers.

Justification:
I believe that my idea will be successful because it appeals to my target audience due to the genre. It is short yet interesting and will get the viewers attention. And finally, the ident is funny and amusing which is what the viewers want to see.
Audience appeal: I feel that my ident will appeal to my target audience of 16-34 due to its unusual genre and the fact that my ident is amusing which is what my target audience wants to see.

29.expansion of idea with storyboard


Our original idea was to have our character go for a walk in the forest and then have a volcano erupt, a giant lava boulder falls out of the sky. It then lands on our purple character causing him to get crushed. A lava monster then comes out of the volcano and morphs with our crushed purple character to form our E4 logo.

Our second idea was to have our purple character walking through the mountains in the Himalayas. An earthquake happens and the top of the mountain falls off crushing our purple character. A yeti then comes over the top of the mountain and morphs with our purple character to form our E4 logo.

Our third idea is to have our purple character going for a walk in the rain, the thunder clouds start rolling in and the lighting starts to strike. A lightening bolt then hits our character causing him to melt into a puddle, a 2nd lightening bolt hits him again causing him to jolt up into our E4 logo.

Our 4th idea is to have our purple character walking down the street, he then turns to cross the road. He steps out into the road and turns to see a car coming, the car then hits him however our purple character absorbs the car and then he turns into a moving E4 logo.

This font is called called HFF kids stuff. i chose this font because kids can relate to it because there are pictures of kids having fun climbing on the letters.



This font is called Initials with curls. i chose this font because i believe it represents the way people would have written letters to each other.

This font is called Batman Forever, i chose this font because it has sharp edges and angles and is easy to read. therefore it makes it modern.

This font is called Billion stars. i chose this font because it is serif and looks like some one from high class has written it.


This font is called Art Brewery. I chose this font because it looks like its been written by a paint brush, at the bottom of a painting when the painter signs their work.



This font is called bonzai. i feel that this font represents the word fashion well because it is unique and stylish.



this font is called versity_regualar. i chose this font for sport because it represents an american college football team.



This font is called cactus sandwich. I believe that this represents the word comedy well because the font its self is funny.



This font is called CFanarchy_regular. I chose this font to represent the word drama because i feel it would be an appropriate font for a title of a TV show.



This font is called Always Forever. I chose this font because i think it represents the way teenagers would write in school or their diary.

15. interview analysis

1) What do you like about E4?
The majority of answers I got from this question were that they enjoyed the shows that E4 broadcasted because they were fun and amusing. From this information, I made sure that my ident was fun and amusing so that it appeals to my target audience. I achieved this by making my main character melt and then get eaten by a monster.

2) What is your favourite program on E4 and why?
Most of the people I asked this question to said that The Big Bang theory was there favorite because they found it funny and amusing. So, for E4 to keep getting viewers and therefore better ratings, they should show more Big Bang theories because thats what the majority of the viewers want to see.

3) What time do you usually watcvh your favourite program?
The majority of people I asked this too said that they usually watch their favourite show at 8 p.m. This gives E4 a good indication of the peak times for them to broadcast their shows. So from this information, I would broadcast my ident at 8 p.m. so the majority of my target audience see my ident.

4) What do you like about the E4 idents?
Nearly everyone I asked this question too said that they loved that fact that the idents are totally random and fun and that alot is happening all at once. So, this information can help E4, becuase now they know what the viewers want to see in an ident. From this information, I made my ident totally random and fun to appeal to my target audience. I achieved this by a random volcano erupting.

5) Do you like the current E4 logo and colour scheme?
Most of the people I asked this question too said that they love the purple colour scheme because it is unique and that the logo its self is fun and interesting. However, a few people said that the logo can be sometimes quite hard to read. From this information, I stuck to the purple colour scheme, but made sure that the writing stands out to my target audience.

6) Do you prefer animated or real life idents?
The majority of people said that they prefer animated idents because they are more fun. However, some people said that they love the fact that E4 do a mixture of both real life and animated idents because they are unique and fun. So from this information, I made sure that my indent was aimed to appeal to the majority of my target audience.

7) What do you expect to see in an E4 logo?
Everybody I asked said that they would expect to see the purple colour shceme, for the logo to be fun and interesting and to also stand out. From this information, I stuck to the purple colour scheme and my logo stands out to my target audience. I have achieved this by making my logo different and unique.

8) How would you improve the E4 logo?
A lot of people said that they wouldn't change the logo. However, the people that said they would change the logo said that they would change the size, either bigger or smaller, and that they would put a background behind the logo. From this information, I put my logo on a background to my my logo appeal to my target audience.


















7. re-branding



ITV Re-brand 
The main ITV logo is a colour-picking design which changes to suit its backdrop as well as the nature of its programming. The broadcaster's flagship channel changed its name from ITV1 to ITV, and, along with ITV2, ITV3, ITV4 and CITV, changed colour scheme to better reflect their programme mix. 

ITV idents 
As a brand at the heart of popular culture, ITV’s main channel now has a far broader range of idents, which capture moments from everyday life across the UK, featuring real people and real scenes. 

why did the rebrand occur? 

The rebranding of ITV will allow them to further cement the relationship in viewers' minds between our shows and the ITV brand that produces and broadcasts them. 
The logo is part of a multi-million pound rebrand, as well as introducing a new lower case logo, designed to look like joined up handwriting, the broadcaster renamed its flagship channel. Known as ITV1 since 2001 it will now simply be called ITV. The uses of colours also appeals to their target audience which is young family and any age above as ITV show a wide range of programs which include entertainment, wildlife and the news. 

E4 Re-brand 
E4 rolls out Eefer character in first brand refresh in six years. 


The broadcaster has taken inspiration from plastic peg display boards for the updated identity, while retaining the channel’s purple colouring. 
It is also rolling out a new brand character, "Eefer", a robotic embodiment of the channel’s familiar logo. 

Eefer will interact with viewers on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, as well as E4’s YouTube and Spotify channels. 
They have designed Eefer like a human. he has the same logo but with arms, legs, eyes and a mouth. even though he has got a mouth he doesn't speak. He holds a board and the information is written on the board containing information on the next programme or up coming programmes. they use Effer like a normal human. 

E4 have decided to to bring back Eefer sinc he was in his last ident in 2003. they uses eefer also in there idents to make it more interesting and comical. 

E4 have got Eefer on there website as a whole different link he has a large picture with a billboard that shows hes going back, however showing his personality but making him sound real ' weather you like it or not' meaning he's coming back and if you don't like him then tough. its trying to make him sound real and large.
