4.Timeline

• The BBC was formed in 1922 by a group of wireless manufacturers. Broadcasting began on the 14th November and could be heard all over the UK. The BBC broadcast  mixture of plays, talks, music and variety acts. 
• There was a general strike in 1926, in the absence of newspapers, the people turned to the BBC for news. the significance of this is that more people would have watched the BBC News therefore increasing the BBCs popularity. 
• 1927, renamed british broadcasting corporation.
• BBC moves into broadcasting house, in portland place london, 1932. Launches the empire service (later called the world service).
• Wimbledon was broadcasted in 1937. This was the first time Tennis was broadcasted on television. 
• In 1938, the FA cup final and Boat race was televised.
• In 1943 new technology (A lighter, more portable field recorder) allowed BBC war correspondents to report from the front line. This was very beneficial for the people at home during the war because they got to experience what the front line of war was like. 
• The BBC gained a reputation for honesty during the war. By 1945 it was broadcasting in 40 languages. This was significant because more people from different nationalities could watch the BBC.
• 1945 also saw the launch of the light program. It played light entertainment and music, often played by the BBC orchestra or the Billy Cotton Band.
• The third program launched in 1946 played classical music. This would have increased the BBC's target audience as the older viewers would have listened to classical music. 
• In 1946 the first T.V. license was introduced of £2 a year. The equivalent to just under £60 in todays money. This paid for the single monochrome channel then being broadcast. 
• In 1948 the olympics were televised. This would have made the BBC very popular as this was the only way the general public would have been able to view the olympics. 
• In 1968 the license fee was raised to £5 plus another £5 if you had color T.V. 
• The current license fee is £135.50 or £11.29 a month. The licence fee is influential as it pays for the BBC without having to have adverts in the shows they broadcast. 
• Until 2007, the BBC was run by its board of governors, under a royal charter which is renewed every 10 years. It is now run by the BBC trust.
