analyze and compare the conventions in 4 genres

Indie:
Indie music is produced independently from major commercial record labels or their subsidiaries, a process that may include a do-it-yourself approach to recording and publishing.  live performance is very common for artists in the indie genre. This way the main focus is on them. Indie videos are a low budget, and have a do it yourself attitude. They are extremely diverse and they have sub genres that include indie rock and indie pop. bet you look good on the dance floor by arctic monkeys fits the ethos of the indie genre because the main focus of the video is on the performance of the band, it had a low budget which is the reason the main focus is on the bands performance.

Hip Hop:
Is a music genre consisting of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements. Hip hop music commonly shows people at parties, lots of girls and showing off their money by showing the singer performing in their car for example. Hip hop videos are differernt to other genres because they they are more expensive to make. the song big pimping by Jay Z fits the ethos of a hip hop music video because the video clearly had a high budget because expensive props were used such as cars and jewellery. the focus is not solely on the performance but to show off the amount of money the artist has.

Is a genre of popular music, which originated in its modern form in the 1950s and 1960s, deriving from rock and roll. The terms popular music and pop music are often used interchangeably, although the former is a description of music which is popularPop music is very eclectic, often borrowing elements from other styles including urban, dance, rock, Latin and country. Like Indie music, pop music also shows the singer performing however, more money is involved in the videos. More cameras and editing and more people are involved in the videos. the song blurred lines by robin thick fits the ethos of a pop music genre because it shows the performance of the performer along with showing off some of the performers wealth such as jewellery and in this case women.

Rock:
Is a genre of popular music that originated as rock and roll in the United States in the 1950s, and developed into a range of different styles in the 1960s and later, particularly in the United Kingdom and the United States. It has its roots in 1940s' and 1950s' rock and roll, itself heavily influenced by rhythm and blues and country music. rock music, like indie and pop music, show the singer/ singers performing however; rock videos usually show the singers performing with their instruments. This is because they want to show their talent in playing the guitar or drums. Rock music is usually quite dark compared to the other music genre. The song Californication by red hot chilli peppers fits the ethos of a rock and roll themed song because not only does it show the performance by the band it also shows the bands wealth.

1.history of idents

History of the BBC ONE Idents
Since the launch of the channel in 1964, BBC ONE has seen nine different incarnations of the on-screen identity.
BBC 1 Ident - 1964 1964 - The first ident was a continuation of the BBC-tv ident of 1963. It featured the globe on a white background. The original ident had a BBC-tv logo. This was changed to just BBC when the channel was launched.
BBC 1 Ident - 19661966 - While the BBC 1 ident symbol remained, a "watch-strap" globe was introduced in 1964, showing the globe in the middle of a striped band. In 1968, the channel converted to colour - the globe and BBC 1 logo remained.
BBC 1 Ident - 19691969 - The first colour ident was introduced. A blue and black mechanical globe rotated while a curved mirror placed behind made up the famous image.
BBC 1 Ident - 1972 1972 - The globe and colour scheme remained the same, but a rounder, italic font was used for the ident introduced in 1972.
BBC 1 Ident - 19781978 - A new blue and yellow globe was introduced. The colour was added using electronics and a new big bold font was introduced.
BBC 1 Ident - 19811981 - A colour change was made to the globe - yellow became green. The caption also changed to a double line version (similar to the BBC 2 logo of the time).
BBC 1 Ident - 19851985 - The new rotating gold and blue BBC 1 globe was introduced. Called COW, for Computer Originated World, it was the first time that BBC 1 had abandoned mechanical models and still slides and used a completely computer generated image.
BBC 1 Ident - 19911991 - The COW globe was replaced with a new on-screen image designed by Lambie-Nairn (who worked on the Nine O’Clock News ident). The design was a swirling world of shadows and reflections.
BBC ONE Ident - 19971997 - The new style BBC ONE ident and logo was dominated by the red and yellow globe balloon. The balloon was filmed flying over 10 different British locations.

Channel 4 Idents

Click for larger image  The award winning Channel Four identity was designed in 1982 by Robinson Lambie-Nairn. Having created the logo, Lambie Nairn then used a computer to animate outlines of the blocks to the final freeze. The movements were then hand colored and shot, but it didnt work, it was lacking shadow and lighting. So they decided to go to Los Angeles and Bo Gehring Aviation who specialised in computer animation to have differing sequences of the same basic symbol done entirely on computer, as at the time there was nowhere in the UK to go for this.

In the 1990s where 3-D logos are out and 'organic' logos are in, Channel 4 updated its image with a new circle theme. The four circle "connections" design along with its "slice of life" scenarios are the most substantial change to the network's image since its inception in 1982, with the original animated 3D coloured blocks.

Channel 4   Towards the end of 2009, a new version of the channel's menu was introduced. Not as sleek as the original, the major differences can be seen in the size of the menu text, and also - for the first time - the physical shape of the '4' logo is shown, rather than being a knock-out effect.

2.corporate identity theory

Corporate Identity Theory

I am writing this essay to explain how E4 uses corporate identity to create an image in the minds of the target audience.

corporate identity theory is the overall image of a corporation or firm or business in the minds of diverse publics, such as customers and investors and employees.(wikipedia)
within corporate identity, there are underlying categories. design, which represents the logo, colours of the logo and the font in which the logo is written in.communication, public relations e.g. E4 estings and programming. And finally, behavior, internal values/norms (what the company wants to acheieve) e.g. shows that appeal to their target audience.

E4 uses corporate design with their logo to make it stand out and appeal to their target audience. they use the colour purple because it is a unisex colour, stands out to thier target audience and represents that E4 shows fun and different shows. The E4 logo its self has a unique font style where the letter E is inside the 4 itself. I think this is beneficial to E4 because it shows they are different and fun.

E4 also uses corporate communication such as the E4 estings. these are short clips to give the viewer and idea of what the programme or show is about.I think this is a good idea because they are fun but informative. They use public relations to help maintain an image and keep the interest of their target audience.

Finally E4 uses corporate behaviour. their internal values and what they want to achieve as a company. As a television company, their number one priority is their viewers, their target audience. The people that that watch the shows and give the show ratings. For example, the 16 to 34 year olds that watch shows such as new girl, and scrubs. Both shows appeal to both male and female viewers.
I think that, because they broadcast shows to both male and female viewers; they get more viewers and therefore more ratings and therefore more money.

in conclusion, E4 uses corporate identity to mantain the image they have created for themselves and the reputation they have in the eyes of their viewers. E4 must keep this image they have so that they can mantain their viewers, their ratings and therefore their money. personally, i think they have created a good image and reputation for thereselves and that the shows they broadcast reflect their reputation.
